Maui County Integrated Waste Conversion and Energy Project
County of Maui, Anaergia Services (Maui Resource Recovery Facility, LLC)
Tax Map Key:
In 2014, the County of Maui contracted Anaergia Services / Maui Recovery Facility LLC to develop a waste-to-energy project to convert waste intended for the Central Maui Landfill into renewable fuels. The proposed Integrated Waste Conversion and Energy Project would consist of an approximately 15 megawatt (MW) waste-to-energy facility at the County's Central Maui Landfill, which could divert and convert up to 85% of the dump's waste into renewable energy. If constructed, it is estimated to have the capacity to reduce over 100,000 tons of greenhouse gases each year. Following an open solicitation process, the County selected Anaergia (Maui Resource Recovery Facility, LLC) to build, own, and operate a resource recovery facility to process solid waste, recover recyclable materials, and generate renewable energy in the form of biogas created through anaerobic digestion. The biogas would then be burned for electricity and/or potentially sold to the Maui Electric Company, however, the parties have not reached an agreement regarding the sale of biogas or electricity. The current status of this project is unknown following a Hawaii Public Utilities Commission ruling in September 2016 on an Anaergia petition. In 2019, a Maui court voided the environmental impact statement previously approved for this project.
