Description:
Following a competitive selection process, in 2014 the County of Maui Department of Environmental Management (DEM) contracted Anaergia Services LLC (Maui Resource Recovery Facility, LLC) to build, own, and operate a new resource recovery facility at the Central Maui Landfill to process solid waste, recover recyclable materials, and generate renewable energy in the form of biogas created through anaerobic digestion. The biogas would then be burned for electricity and/or potentially sold to the Maui Electric Company (MECO). The reported $100 million Integrated Waste Conversion and Energy Project would consist of an approximately 15 megawatt (MW) waste-to-energy facility with capacity to divert and convert up to 80-85% of the landfill's waste into renewable energy and reduce over 100,000 tons of greenhouse gases annually. In an August 2019 Maui Council meeting, Anaergia reportedly stated its intent to respond to an upcoming MECO request for proposals for new renewable energy projects. The contract between DEM and Anaergia requires Anaergia to contract with MECO by June 2020. In July 2019, DEM filed a Final Environmental Assessment for new proposed solid waste management facilities at the Central Maui Landfill.
