Description:
Currently owned and operated by Global Algae Innovations (GAI) and originally developed by General Atomics with funding from the US Department of Defense to support aviation biofuel development, the Kauai Algae Farm is located on approximately 33 acres of Grove Farm land adjacent to the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) Kapaia Power Station near Lihue. The facility captures and utilizes carbon dioxide from the Kapaia power plant to feed and cultivate algae for potential conversion into biofuel. In 2013, the US Department of Energy Bioenergy Technologies Office awarded a $5M investment to GAI partner Hawaii BioEnergy, which assumed control of the facility, to develop a cost-effective photosynthetic open pond system to produce algal oil and demonstrate preprocessing technologies that reduce energy use and the overall cost of extracting lipids and producing fuel intermediates. At this facility, GAI is developing and implementing new technologies in algae pond design, carbon dioxide feeding, and algae harvesting and dewatering.
