Developed by Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) subsidiary, KIUC Renewable Solutions One (KRS1), and REC Solar, this 12 megawatt alternating current (MWac) solar farm become operational in October 2015 and provides 4-5% of Kauai's overall annual energy needs. KIUC purchases power from this facility at $0.1280/kilowatt-hour through April 2040 under the power purchase agreement approved by the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission in 2012. The $54 million project was supported financially by the US Department of Agriculture Rural Utilities Service and was developed in partnership with the Homestead Community Development Corporation on 60 acres of land owned by the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands along Kuhio Highway. The facility provided up to 100 construction jobs, consists of 59,000 panels, and includes a 6 MW Saft battery-based energy storage system to provide frequency support, voltage regulation, and energy reserve functions for the local grid.
